What does the Bible say about death?

The Bible teaches that death is a sleep. Those who have died rest unconscious in the grave — the dead know nothing, and their thoughts have perished — awaiting the resurrection. Our hope is not an immortal soul going straight to heaven or hell the moment we die; our hope is the resurrection at Christ’s return, when the dead in Christ shall rise first, and we will see our loved ones again.

What the Bible Says

“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 9:5–6 — the dead know not any thing
“His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.”
Psalm 146:4 — in that very day his thoughts perish
“These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.”
John 11:11–14 — Jesus called death a sleep
“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
Daniel 12:2 — they sleep, and they shall awake
“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope… For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13, 16–17 — the dead in Christ shall rise first
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
Ecclesiastes 12:7 — the breath of life returns to God who gave it

An Honest Question

“Are our dead loved ones watching over us?”

It is a comforting thought, and many hold it dear — but honestly, the Bible does not teach it. It says the dead know nothing (Ecclesiastes 9:5) and that in the day of death their thoughts perish (Psalm 146:4). Our loved ones rest in sleep, unaware of our joys and sorrows, until the resurrection. The comfort Scripture gives is better than a watching spirit: they are safe in God’s memory, nothing of them is lost to Him, and when Jesus returns we will see them again — awake, alive, and never to be parted again.
