What does the Bible say about the Sabbath?

The Bible teaches that the Sabbath is the seventh day, Saturday, kept from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. It is a gift of rest God gave at Creation and kept in the Fourth Commandment, and Jesus kept it. It remains God’s day of rest and communion with Him.

What the Bible Says

“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”
Genesis 2:2–3 — God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work… For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”
Exodus 20:8–11 — the Fourth Commandment
“The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.”
Mark 2:27 — a gift made for man
“And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.”
Luke 4:16 — Jesus kept the Sabbath, as His custom was
“And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.”
Luke 23:56 — His followers rested on the Sabbath
“It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest… from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.”
Leviticus 23:32 — from even unto even, sunset to sunset

An Honest Question

“Didn’t the Sabbath change to Sunday?”

The Bible itself gives no command changing the Sabbath to another day; the seventh day remains. The Sabbath of Scripture was never moved by God — it stands where He placed it, at Creation and in His commandments.
