What does the Bible say about the judgment?

The Bible teaches that God’s judgment is real, and that it is just. Scripture speaks of a judgment already underway in heaven — an investigative judgment, in which the books are opened and the lives of God’s professed people are examined — and of a final judgment still to come, when God brings every work into judgment, with every secret thing. At its centre stands Christ, who is both Judge and Advocate: the One who judges is the same One who died for us and pleads for His people. Those who overcome have their names kept in the book of life. So the Bible’s call is not fear, but readiness — and trust in Christ, for whom the judgment is good news.

What the Bible Says

“I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.”
Daniel 7:9–10 — the judgment was set, and the books were opened
“And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.”
Daniel 8:14 — then shall the sanctuary be cleansed
“And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”
Revelation 14:6–7 — the hour of his judgment is come
“For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
Ecclesiastes 12:14 — every work, with every secret thing
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”
2 Corinthians 5:10 — before the judgment seat of Christ
“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”
Revelation 20:12 — another book was opened, which is the book of life
“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”
Revelation 3:5 — I will not blot out his name out of the book of life

An Honest Question

“Should we fear the judgment?”

Honestly — the judgment is a solemn thing, and Scripture never treats it lightly. But for those who are in Christ, it is good news, not bad news. Why? Because the Judge is also our Advocate — the very One who died for us is the One who speaks for us: “if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1). Jesus Himself promises that the one who hears His word and believes “shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24). The judgment does not catch Christ’s people by surprise with an accuser they have never met; it openly confesses their names before the Father (Revelation 3:5). So the Bible’s call is not fear, but readiness — a life surrendered to Christ now, trusting the Advocate who is also the Judge.
